Study: Abstinence Ed in Virginia cuts rate of sexual initiation by half

Dear Colleague:

We would like to make you aware of a research article that will be published in the January/February 2008 issue of the American Journal of Health Behavior (AJHB), titled, "An Abstinence Program's Impact on Cognitive Mediators and Sexual Initiation" This paper reports the results of an evaluation study conducted by the Institute for Research & Evaluation in collaboration with, the Virginia Abstinence Education Initiative (VAEI). The article describes how an abstinence-only curriculum reduced the rate of virgin adolescents' sexual initiation by about one-half, twelve months after their participation in the program.  The study provides credible evidence that "abstinence works" and that it is a viable strategy for improving the sexual and emotional health of America's youth.  It also provides tangible evidence for some causal mechanisms through which abstinence-only programs can reduce teen sexual behavior. Although not coming out in hard copy until 2008, the AJHB gives the Institute permission to distribute the article for professional use prior to that time.
