Free Teens Zambia Report on Ndola presentations
Zambia2

The survey was conducted after presenting the “Living in the Age of AIDS” and “Deciding your future” lessons. Over 440 students at Dominican Convent   School from grade 8 to10 in Ndola received teachings from PDHC (Z) educators and participated in the survey. We were a bit selective in choosing the educators  for this school because it is one of the best schools in Ndola.  The educators were John Banda for Grade 10s and 9s and Kelvin for Grade 9s  and some 8 while Charity, Zele and Stella took the grade 8 and some grade 9. We were given to have a normal classroom setting meaning we taught as any other  teacher with 40 minutes per period for consecutive two weeks. The average  number in each class was 40 students. There were 4 classes of grades 8 and 9 while  grade 10 had three classes.

95% of those who participated in the survey found the program very  interesting. 96% found the speakers to be good. 100% of those who participated in the survey recommended the program to other  teens. All teens strongly agree that teens can have a lot of fun without having sex only one did not strongly agree but she mostly agrees. All teens surveyed agreed strongly that sexually active teens run a high risk for  teen pregnancy or STD except for 2 who mostly agreed. 100% strongly agreed that marriage is the best place for sex. 3% plan to wait until after high school to start having sex while 97% plan to wait until marriage. 97% strongly disagreed that if they “fall in love” with someone they should  have sex with him or her while 3% were not sure. 97% strongly agreed that a teen who has had sex can choose to stop while 3% were not sure. 100% of the teens surveyed agreed that if a Free Teens club was started at  their school, they would like to receive information about it.

COMMENTS FROM STUDENTS ABOUT WHAT THEY LIKED MOST AND THE LEAST ABOUT THE  PROGRAM:
“the teaching was very interesting, educative and clear to me because it has  helped me on how to lead my life. I didn’t like the part where we were told  that some information is hidden in the safe sex campaign because it is depressing”

“Everything was nice and interesting because it brought a lot of things that I  never thought of”

the speaker was open and realistic, also having a very good approach for teens. The program had a lot for us to learn but there wasn’t enough time”
“when we were talking about sex before marriage/virginity and relationships,  because it taught me more about sex even things I didn’t know and it helped me plan my future.”

“the time the speaker was talking about the authority usgirls have over our own bodies. He enlightened us and made us realise how special we are and that we are not weak”

“the information given was educative and beneficial and I can now decide for  my future. The time was too short for all the information to be given to us,  that’s what I didn’t like about the program”

“the speaker was open and interesting. We learnt a lot of new things although we didn’t have enough time. We wish him to come again next time”

“the information given was excellent, reason it was well researched and accurate. The time given for the discussion was too short. More time is needed for such discussions to enable us to ask more questions and seek advice”  “his means of teaching, his expressions and the message he directed to us is what I liked most”

“the thing about abstinence and peer pressure was very interesting but the time was too short. The topic on diseases was enlightening.”

“the presentation of the work and the learning of new things. The time was not so much we were not satisfied”

“I liked the topic about how HIV is contracted and what it does to the immune system. I liked this topic because it taught me how to prevent HIV/AIDS, STDs  and unwanted pregnancies etc. ABSTINENCE IS THE BEST!”

Next coming term which will start in January 2007, we are requesting to start visiting the schools that are in remote areas. This will require funds to reach these schools. With our little effort in fundraising we cannot manage to reach the far away schools. We really need your help. Could you help us by fundraising on our hehalf there in the U.S. We truly need your help as we await funding from donor organizations.
